IT’s GOOD TO BE BAD
Ed Sheeran writes bad songs
He knows that he does
And he’s glad when we does
Because after the bad ones
He tends to write better ones
Then he writes his chart-topping best ones
He describes his process like a blocked pipe
When he first turns on the tap
The water that comes out is dirty and disgusting
But he doesn’t turn the tap off
He leaves it on
Letting out more horrible water
Eventually the water will start to clear up
And finally, it will run crystal clear
I think it’s a helpful analogy
Because ‘no such thing as a bad idea’
Is clearly nonsense
We should acknowledge bad ideas for what they are
Bad
But they shouldn’t make us despondent
Because they are just part of the process
You need to get them out
And out of the way
And into the bin
So that the good stuff can run clear
